Tennis Elbow management in Ayurveda

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition that can result from overuse of the muscles and tendons in the elbow. Tennis elbow is often linked to repeated motions of the wrist and arm.Despite its name, most people who get tennis elbow don't play tennis. Some people have jobs that involve repeated movements of the hand like plumbers, painters, carpenters, and butchers, IT professionals which can lead to tennis elbow.

The pain of the tennis elbow occurs mainly when the tough, cord-like tissues of the forearm muscles attach to a bony bump on the outside of the elbow. The tissues are known as tendons. Pain can spread into the forearm and wrist. Most people develop tennis elbow in their dominant arm (the side you naturally use for most activities). You're most likely to have tennis elbow in whichever arm you use the most for a repetitive activity. Rarely Tennis elbow can develop in both arms at the same time. The most common tennis elbow symptoms include pain on the outside of elbow (the side furthest away from the center of your body when your arms are at your sides with your palms facing forward) ,stiffness and swelling of affected area. A weakened grip, especially when you're trying to hold something like a racket, pen or shake someone's hand is another major sign of the disease.

Ayurveda includes Tennis Elbow under the term Koorpara Sandhi Shoola or Sandhi Gata Vata of Koorpara Sandhi. In Ayurveda Koorpara sandhi refers to the elbow joints. Vata , the energy factor which is responsible for movements , is aggravated by its own causative factors (like over consumption of bitter/ pungent/ astringent tastes, dry/ cold food items, skipping meals, over activity, injury, reduced quality of bone, stress  etc) and leads to symptoms of Sandhigata vata like pain, swelling and restricted joint movements in elbow.

The Ayurvedic approach to ailment seeks out the underlying reason rather than the symptoms. The treatments are aimed at improving blood circulation and reducing the inflammation and strain on the affected tendon. Muscle fibers and tendons rejuvenate through Ayurvedic treatment.
