Understanding Skin Health in Ayurveda
Skin is an important organ in the body that protects the body from UV radiation, injuries, and heat; controls body temperature; and produces Vitamin D. Ayurveda describes skin as Twak which covers the whole body. The vitality of skin is maintained by Rakta Dhatu and appearance of the skin is dependent on the characteristics of Rakta and Shukra.
The colour, thickness, texture, and glow of skin are determined by unique body constitution (Prakriti). Therefore, the skin care routine varies depending on the type of the Prakriti of an individual. It includes:
- Vata Prakriti: Dry and uneven toned, rough, prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Thin texture with fine pores and thin cracked skin.
- Pitta Prakriti: Extremely prone to getting tanned as it is sensitive. Soft, warm moist (slight wrinkle moles, acne), and medium thickness.
- Kapha Prakriti: Thick oily skin less likely to wrinkles with an abundance of sebum production which tends to lead to clogged pores.
When these doshas are balanced, the skin looks clear and healthy. But imbalance can lead to different skin problems.
Common Skin Problems Addressed in Ayurveda
The common skin condition explained in Ayurveda include:
- Acne: Acne vulgaris is the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts as a result of obstruction and inflammation of pilosebaceous units. It is commonly seen in juveniles and adolescents. - Eczema: Eczema is characterized by dry itchy skin with areas of poorly demarcated erythema and scale. In the acute phase eczema may be vesicular and oozing. In the chronic phase it may become hyperpigmented and lichenified (thickened). Scratch marks are frequently seen. - Rosacea: Acne rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the face, causing redness, visible blood vessels, small bumps, and sensitivity. According to Ayurveda, rosacea can be correlated to conditions arising from Pitta aggravation with the involvement of Rakta (blood) along with the association of Vata and Kapha doshas.
- Psoriasis: Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune skin disorder characterized by rapid skin cell proliferation resulting in scaling, inflammation, and redness. According to Ayurveda, psoriasis can be closely related to the condition known as Kitibha or Ekakustha. It is primarily caused by an imbalance of the Vata and Kapha doshas.
- Dry Skin: Usually caused by Vata imbalance. The skin may feel rough, flaky, and dehydrated.
- Oily Skin: Oily Skin occurs due to Kapha dominance causing imbalance.
