Ayurvedic Medicines can be classified into 2 groups:
- Medicines of plant origin
- Medicines of mineral origin
Avaleha (Herbal jams): Herbal jams are prepared with raw sugar such as jaggery, honey as the base. They are herbal confections. The sugar acts as a preservative, improves the taste of the herbs and enhances tonic properties. Not all of them, however taste good and may have a pungent and astringent taste.
Kvatha (Concentrated herbal decoctions): It is prepared by boiling the chipped herbs / plant parts in water. The taste of this preparation is usually bitter / astringent. This is the most common form of internal medication used by a good Ayurveda doctor in UAE, which is highly effective, if you can compromise with the taste.
Ghrutha (Medicated ghee): Ghee from cow's milk is used as the base to extract the active components from the raw herbs. The Grutha / medicated ghee will not escalate your weight / cholesterol as they are prescribed for a shorter duration.
Choornam (Herbal powder): These are dry herbal formulation in the form of fine powders. These formulations are either used internally or externally mixed with food and other liquid materials like honey, warm water, buttermilk etc.
Thaila (Medicated oils): Medicated oils are prepared mainly with sesame oil base and sometimes, with the base of coconut oil, castor oil, bee wax etc. These are used for both external and internal purposes. We use several herbal oil formulations externally which contain healing herbs.
Vati or gutika (Tablets / pills / capsules):
The Ayurveda Tablets / Capsules are palatable as well as highly effective. There are modern formulations of Kashayam available as Tablets and Soft Gelatin Capsules; however, herbal pastes and herbal extracts, are of superior quality over tableted forms.
Swarasa (Herbal Juice):
Raw herbal juices are prepared by crushing and squeezing the fresh herbs. Boiling with water or keeping in water for 48 hours is another way of preparing herbal juices from dried herbs.
Varthi - Medicated paste in the form of dry sticks.
Netrabindu - Eye drops.
Anjana - Medicated collyrium used to apply in the eyes.
Sathwa - Water extracted from dry herbs.
Pishti - Triturating the drugs with specified liquids and exposing to Sun or Moonlight.
Avarthi - Herbs are added repeatedly and boiled, to increase the strength and potency of the medicinal formulations.
Guggulu - Exudates of herb Commiphora mukul is the main ingredient of such preparations.
Arka - Liquid medicines obtained from distillation process.
Kshara - Alkaline substances obtained from the ash form of drugs.
Lepa - Ointment or medicated paste for external application.
