Hair fall

Hair loss affects men and women of all age group. Assessing and treating alopecia is an important part of primary care. The scalp hair grows approximately 0.35 mm per day, while the scalp sheds approximately 100 hairs per day. The hair growth and shedding passes through 4 stages of a cycle.i.e. Growing phase, regression phase, resting phase and shedding phase. 85 to 90 percent of scalp follicles are in the growing phase, 2 to 3 percent of hair follicles are in regression phase, 10 to 15 percent of hair follicles undergo a rest period for about three months and the inactive or dead hair is ejected from the skin, leaving a solid, hard, white nodule at its proximal shaft in the shedding phase.

In androgenetic alopecia, pattern of hairloss is temporal-frontal loss in men and central thinning in women. In Alopecia areata there is localized area of complete hair loss and this may extend to the entire scalp in alopecia totalis or the entire body in alopecia universalis.

Hair fall is caused due to many factors such as poor nutrition, irregular lifestyle, Environmental factors such as pollution, stress, anxiety, tension and inadequate sleep or rest. These factors can lead to excess toxin build-up in the body.

Hair fall treatments in ayurveda

Ayurveda considers hair as the by-product of bone tissues, and thus the poor quality of bone tissue results in unhealthy hairs. The treatment for hairfall in Ayurveda depends on the imbalanced doshas. If Vata dosha is aggravated, your hair is susceptible to become excessively dry, frizzy and brittle. In Pitta dosha aggravated state, symptoms, it presents with receding hairlines, thinning texture and changes in hair colour. The hair will be excessively oily and sticky if there is kapha dosha vitiation.

There are various treatments available in Ayurveda such as shirodhara, shiro abhyanga, shirolepa and Takradhara which helps efficiently in treating the condition. The treatment also consists of internal administration of rasayanas and kesh vardhak yogas/dravyas. Panchakarma also helps in detoxification and rejuvenation which not only prevents hairfall but also helps in regrowth of recently, lost hairs.

Premature Graying

Hair color is produced by tiny cells called melanocytes in the hair follicles. In the course of a lifetime, the activity of the melanocytes in each follicle retards, resulting in gray hairs. Each individual's melanocyte-clock is different. Premature graying has also been associated with thyroid disorders, vitiligo, vitamin B12 deficiency, and anemia.
