Joint Pains Treatment in Dubai

Knee pain

The treatment of knee pain is completely different according to the cause of the pain & swelling. The treatment principle and drugs of choices are unique in each case. There are multiple causes which can result in pain and swelling on the knee or knees:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis – the body's immune system wrongly attacks joints and inflame the joint membrane.
  • Gout – associated with high uric acid levels in the blood which results deposit of sodium urate crystals in the joint.
  • Pseudo gout – results from high levels of Parathyroid hormone.
  • Early Osteoarthritis - wear-and-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movements. It can also occur secondary to injuries.
  • Bursitis – Bursae are fluid filled sacs that reduce the friction of muscles and tendons that rub over bones. Inflammation of these sacs can result in knee pain.
  • Infra-patellar fat pad impingement – the fat pad between knee cap and thigh bone can get impinged in a direct impact.
  • Meniscal cyst & Meniscal tear – cyst or injury of the shock absorbing cartilage of the knee.
  • Chondromalacia patella – Irritation of the cartilage on the under surface of knee cap.
  • Ligament injuries etc.

Undoubtedly, knee health is critical and will have a profound impact on our daily life. Risk factors of knee health are being overweight; repeated strain; previous injury to the knee etc.

Dr. Shyam's Ayurveda Clinic in Dubai offers exceptional joint pains treatment, utilizing Ayurvedic principles and therapies to alleviate discomfort and restore mobility, providing effective and holistic solutions for those seeking relief from joint pains.

Osteoarthritis (Sandhi Vata)

Often called wear-and-tear arthritis, Sandhivata occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over time. Ayurveda describes old age as a Vata age, and majority of the arthritis patients’ fall in this age group. In sandhivata, wear-and-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movements. Knees are common sites. While Sandhivata can damage any joint in your body, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, neck, lower back, knees and hips.

Treatment tips:

  • Shyam’s Ayurveda treatments for osteoarthritis aim to:
  • Prevent wear & tear
  • Strengthen the ligaments and muscles
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Maintain healthy body weight.
  • Daily intake of Black sesame seeds improves bone strength.

  • A Vata balancing treatment will naturally reduce the pain and inflammation. Internal Vata balancing herbs have anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, analgesic properties which helps managing the pain symptoms.
  • External treatments like Upanaham (bandage) Abhyangam (Ayurveda massage), Kizhi (application of medicinal compresses), Dhara (Continuous stream of medicated warm oil or milk), Lepa (Herbal paste for external application) are also effective in managing the local pain of arthritis.
  • Exercise can increase the endurance and strengthen the muscles around the joints, making them more stable. However, one should avoid exercising tender, injured or swollen joints.
  • Even a small amount of weight loss can relieve some pressure and reduce your pain.
Rheumatoid arthritis (Vata Rakta)

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body’s immune system malfunctions, attacking healthy tissue in addition to its normal enemies, such as bacteria and viruses. This malfunction causes inflammation which leads to pain, swelling in the joints and may eventually cause joint damage and painful disability. Again, the exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown; experts believe that the disease may be the result of a combination of factors, including Genetics (inherited genes), Environment (triggered by an infectious agent such as a bacteria or virus), Hormones, Body's response to stressful events etc.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is treated as VataRakta in Ayurveda, which is a Vata imbalanced disease. Vitiation of Rakta (blood) tissues is produced by incompatible diet, lifestyles, indigestion, sedentary work etc. This can be referred to quality deterioration of blood tissue or as toxic accumulation of imbalanced metabolic activities and pathogenic microbes. This impurity in the blood, imbalance the energy factor Vata and leads to inflammation of the joints. As per Ayurveda, excess sour & salty foods; fermented foods; urud dhal, yoghurt, raw veggies, sesame products, seafood, vinegar, milk, jaggery etc should be limited by an RA patient.

Ayurveda therapies & medications can safely and effectively reduce inflammation in your joints in order to relieve pain and prevent or slow joint damage. Ayurveda gives clinically significant improvement in rheumatoid arthritis on a par with other medicines with the added advantage of lesser side-effects.

Treatment Tips:

The line of Ayurveda treatment for RA involves:

Gout

Gout is characterized by sudden, severe pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints, often the big toe, ankle or knees. Severe pain often at night is seen. Joints get inflamed and become warm, appear red and shiny. Our body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines — substances that are found naturally in your body. Purines are also found in foods, such as steak, organ meats and seafood, alcoholic beverages, sweetened juices, gravies, liver, sweetbreads, asparagus, beef, cauliflower, lentils, lobster, mushrooms, oatmeal, peas, pork, spinach etc. High uric acid, once thought of as a ‘rich man's disease’ (because only the wealthy could afford to eat salted meats, rich breads and malted liquors on a regular basis) is making a comeback due to the increased intake of foods with high Purines content. Normally, uric acid dissolves in our blood and passes through kidneys into the urine. But sometimes either our body produces too much uric acid, or our kidneys excrete too little uric acid. In an Ayurveda perspective, Pitta body type people produce more uric acid. When this happens, uric acid can build up, forming sharp, needlelike urate crystals in a joint or surrounding tissue that cause pain, inflammation and swelling. Some people may be able to lower their uric acid levels through diet alone.

Treatment Tips:

  • Ayurveda treats the condition as Vata Pitta imbalance or as Pitta dominated Vatarakta. Medicines like Amruthotharam kashayam, Guloochyadi kashayam, Kokilaksham kashayam, Kaisora guggulu, Shaddharanam etc. gives quick results. Consult our Ayurveda clinic in Dubai / Ajman.
  • Drink water boiled with Gokshura seeds (tribulus terrestris)
  • Try applying oils like Madhuyashtyadi thailam, Pinda thailam, Murivenna.
  • Reduce the Purine rich food as well as sour and salty tastes in excess.
Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)

Adhesive capsulitis also known as frozen shoulder is a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. Frozen shoulder begins gradually, worsen over time and then resolve, usually within 1-3 years. Frozen shoulder can occur after an injury or prolonged immobilization of your shoulder. Frozen shoulder occurs when the joint capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, restricting its movement. People with other health conditions like - diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and thyroid diseases, may have an increased risk of developing frozen shoulder. Women above the age of 40 years are at the risk of developing Frozen shoulder; Frozen shoulder can go chronic and require few weeks of treatment under supervision. Frozen shoulder typically develops slowly, and in three stages. Each of these stages can last a few months:

  1. Painful stage (pain occurs with movement and shoulder's range of motion starts to become limited)
  2. Frozen stage (pain may diminish; however, shoulder becomes stiffer and range of motion decreases)
  3. Thawing stage (range of motion begins to improve).

Treatment Tips:

  • It is considered as a Vata imbalance (Vyana Vata) in Ayurveda.
  • Ayurveda treatment is not just about applying oils and oil therapy. A disease develops in several stages; an Ayurveda treatment procedure also progresses in several stages.
  • The treatment of a Frozen shoulder & Plantar Fasciitis can be staged into three:
  • Vata Kapha Balancing – Medicines of warm potency, spicy tastes; and dry heat therapies.
  • Vata Balancing & Nourishing – Warm potency medicines, sweet tasted herbs, oily quality and oil therapies.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises are also important. Ayurveda offers best treatment for musculo-skeletal problems; meet our Ayurveda doctor in Ajman / Dubai with all your reports.

Heel Pain

The most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis. In plantar fasciitis, pain will be felt on the bottom of heel and in Achilles’ tendinitis, pain is felt on the backside of the heel. Heel spurs, Bursitis, Osteomyelitis, Peripheral neuropathy, Reactive arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Stress fractures, Tarsal tunnel syndrome etc. can be other causes of heel pain and the Ayurveda treatment varies according to the cause. The Ayurveda prognosis of a heel pain is also based on the cause and severity of the condition.

Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot (plantar fascia). Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. The pain normally decreases with movement, but it might return after long periods of standing or walking. People who are overweight and those who wear improper shoes have an increased risk of plantar fasciitis. Most people who have plantar fasciitis recover in few months with Ayurveda medicines, therapies, resting and stretching. Heel spurs occur in, at least half the people who have plantar fasciitis. A heel spur is a calcium deposit causing a bony protrusion on the underside of the heel bone. Most of such cases get better with nonsurgical treatments.

Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of the band of tissue that connects calf muscles to the backside of the heel bone. Achilles tendinitis can be treated with relatively simple medicines and self-care. Serious cases of Achilles tendinitis can lead to tendon ruptures that may require surgical repair.

Treatment Tips:

  • Upanaha is a simple Ayurveda procedure one can do at home to reduce heel pains related to plantar fasciitis, Achilles’ tendinitis and calcaneal spur. Make a paste of Horse gram powder (1-2 tablespoon) and or Dill seeds powder (1-2 tablespoon) with Sesame oil (2-3 teaspoons) added with rock salt (1 teaspoon), vinegar (1 teaspoon) and yoghurt (enough quantity to make a paste). Apply the paste around the heel and bandage overnight and remove in the morning. Try this for 5-7 days.

In Trigger finger, the finger may stick in a bent position or it may bend or straighten – like a trigger being pulled and released. Triggering is usually more pronounced in the morning, while firmly grasping an object or when straightening your finger. People who are involved in repetitive fine finger movements & gripping movements are prone to develop Trigger finger. Post-surgery to Carpel Tunnel syndrome; Diabetic & rheumatoid arthritis patients are at higher risk of developing trigger finger. Trigger finger occurs when the affected finger's tendon (tendons are fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone), or tendon sheath becomes irritated and inflamed. This inflammation interferes with the normal gliding motion of the tendon. The sheaths hold the tendons close to the bone. When the sheath or tendon becomes too thick, the tendon cannot glide easily through it. Prolonged inflammation can produce scarring, thickening and the formation of nodules.

Treatment Tips:

  • Ayurveda approach to Trigger finger is as - Vata imbalance in the Snayu (tendons). When the acute inflammation persists, lepana & bandages are suggested.
  • Application of a paste of Dill seeds (Anethum graveolens) mixed with warm water or vinegar can reduce acute inflammation.
  • In the chronic stage, a procedure named - Upanaham - can be done at home. Mix fine powders of Dill seeds (2-3 teaspoon), Horse gram (2-3 teaspoon), Rock salt (1/2 teaspoon), Sesame oil (1 teaspoon), Vinegar (1 teaspoon) with Yoghurt and prepare a paste. Apply the paste on the affected joint and wrap with a cloth; retain overnight and remove in the morning. Repeat this for a week or two.
  • A commonly found plant in UAE - Calotropis (Sanskrit name: Arka; Malayalam name: Erukku), can be used as an external home remedy on Trigger finger. Apply sesame oil on Calotropis leaves, lukewarm and wrap around the affected joint overnight.
  • When home tips & external applications are not working, internal medicines like Maha Rasnadi kashayam, Guggulu thiktakam kashayam, Yogaraja guggulu, Gandhathailam etc gives good results in the treatment of Trigger fingers; meet our Ayurvedic doctor in Dubai or in Ajman.
